The bow's string is wound on pulleys that are cross-connected to the opposing arms of the bow. Decisive factors for this advantage are: low force required to tension the string; reduced perceived vibration when the arrow is released; the bow's resistance to varying temperatures and humidity; increased accuracy, repeatability and shooting range; adjustability; increased arrow speed.
Compound bows are most commonly used in sporting disciplines and recreational activities, but can also be used in other disciplines when properly adapted. In some countries, a hunting block bow may be approved for hunting.
