How long did the longest resuscitation last? What are the chances of survival for a person in an avalanche? Why are cave actions considered one of the most difficult? What was the longest TOPR expedition? Will the Falcon helicopter arrive to pick up an injured person always and at any time? What role do TOPR dogs play in rescuing people? How far do rescuers risk their own lives? What motivates them? What makes them nervous? How do they train? What do they know how to do?
This book is the first of its kind in Poland. No one has succeeded so far in getting rescuers to talk about the hardships of their work. About their successes, failures, doubts and heroic steadfastness.
TOPR is a hermetic environment of people who “do their job,” not really talking about it. Because who will understand their fear when they look death in the eye? Who will feel this burden of responsibility for colleagues and the rescued? For whom will those few words: “I solemnly swear under the word of honor” will be a life motto?
TOPR is an institution with a 110-year tradition. An institution formed by people of flesh and blood. Ordinary, and yet - exceptional. We invite you to their world. To the stories of life, determination, pain, hope and miracles.
“TOPR from the beginning of its activities in 1909 brings together in its ranks people with different views and fates, but always able to combine their strength and skills for the common goal of saving people. This is the greatest strength of our association. I invite you to visit TOPR rescuers and learn about our perspective on the problem of accidents in the mountains, and perhaps even more to learn about our approach to rescuing people in the Tatras and the challenges we face every day. Such an opportunity is provided by this book. I invite you to read it.”
Jan Krzysztof, head of TOPR
