The book "Ekstremalni. O bohaterach, którzy narażają życie, by ratować innych." - Dariusz Jaroń
Natural disasters, cataclysms, disasters, terrorist attacks, high mountain accidents, dozens of injured and injured people - these are the conditions in which the heroes of this book work. Medics who are ready to carry help in the most extreme situations and places, when not only the health and life of the patient, but also themselves are at risk.
Extremes is stories of doctors and rescuers operating where common sense suggests urgent evacuation. Together with the heroes of this book, we will move near Szczekociny, just after the train disaster in 2012, to Silesia, where in 2006 the roof of a trade fair hall in which 700 people were present collapsed, under Everest just after the tragic 1996 storm, we'll stand at the finish line of the Boston Marathon just after bombs exploded, we'll take a look at a makeshift hospital receiving soldiers wounded in the battle for Mosul, and we'll visit Nepal shortly after a strong earthquake and Beirut just after an explosion at the port.
Always ready for the extremes of the battlefield, the cruelty of terror, the devastation after cataclysmic events have passed, or the fragility of human beings when confronted with the power of nature, they say that everything can be used to, adapted to, and many things assimilated - from knowledge to procedures and mental preparation. The most difficult thing is to control one's emotions enough to think first of helping others in extreme situations, and not - in accordance with natural instinct - to take one's feet by the belt.
Extreme medicine is defined by circumstances. The simplest tasks that doctors and rescuers are accustomed to in a hospital setting, such as hooking up a patient to an oxygen machine, become quite a feat when a doctor or rescuer is operating on the side of a steep mountain or on a battlefield, where they, too, are at risk of losing their health or lives.
Extreme medicine is not just about helping others, it is about helping them.
This book is about such people. About rescuers and practicing medicine without an apron.
