The Arctic Diary is a record of a trip to Greenland in 1891-1892. Josephine Peary, along with her husband, Robert Peary (later the first conqueror of the North Pole) and crew, set out on a research expedition to explore the land and finally determine whether Greenland was an island. Mr. and Mrs. Peary came into contact with the Inuit people living there, living among them and learning the difficult art of survival in the far North.
Josephine Peary's diary is an amazing testimony of fortitude of mind and body, and a clash of two very different worlds: the people of the American upper classes with the people of the distant snow and ice. The author is a lady of good company who swaps her corset for a fur suit, her umbrella for a shotgun, and together with her badly injured husband faces the ruthless elements, with her account challenging our perceptions and stereotypes of the explorers of old....
