John Mead Gould was born in 1839 in the state of Maine into the family of a wealthy lawyer. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, he volunteered for the Army of the North, in which he served intermittently until the end of the war, rising to the rank of major. On March 18, 1866, the day he finally took off his uniform, he noted in his diary:
"I served faithfully and was in the pay for four years, five months and twenty-one days. General Sherman was absolutely right when he said that war is hell. He also had a certain nameless ancient Greek of two thousand years ago to say that more bastards are born in war than die."
Gould kept a diary during the war, which became the basis of the later written "History of the First, Tenth and Twenty-ninth Maine Regiments" - one of the more faithful historical sources on the Civil War. After the war, the author imitated various jobs, he was, among other things, a bank employee, but what is most interesting from our point of view is that in his free time he loved to camp outdoors and travel, and that he wrote his second book on this subject, one of the earliest guidebooks: "How to Camp Out." The first edition appeared in print in 1877.
The book in a Polish language version.
