Subarctica is an account of a trip in the summer of 2020 to Swedish Lapland. The author set off in a canvas old-world boat for a month alone to contend with wildlife, the elements and loneliness. The book takes the reader on this journey, and aims to give him a taste of true adventure in all its aspects.
What does it mean to travel the old-fashioned way? What is a lonely journey into the unknown, with a wool blanket, a canvas tent, an old-fashioned boat, without modern means of communication - telephone, internet, satellite transmitters? What can push a modern man into the clutches of danger, why does he abandon a safe and comfortable city, leave his family for a long month to be bitten by mosquitoes and get wet in the steamy days of a subarctic summer? How does he endure his own company?
Subarctica is also a photo album - printed on chalk paper, with a hardcover and sewn spine, it contains 48 photographs taken using the classic pinhole technique. It is a magical journey through images and words - both into the world of rocky cliffs and Arctic lakes, and inside the head of a traveler stupefied by smoke and fear.
The book in Polish language version.
