Woodcraft by Nessmuk is a classic 19th century guide to forest camping. The reader could learn from it how to sew a tent, build a shelter, make a fire, bake bread or venison, catch fish, how to complete light equipment for a long hike, what kind of canoe boat to choose, how to make mosquito ointment, and what knife and axe to take into the woods.
In 1884, the New York-based Forest & Stream Publishing Company published a book that immediately became a bestseller, received many reissues and is still published in English today.
Written in light, lively, humorous language, the guidebook has inspired people who love forest recreation for years. Thanks to the first Polish translation, we can see for ourselves how many of the camp's tips are still relevant today, and note with amusement how similar the campers of the past were to us despite the distance, and how little human nature has changed despite the passage of years.
The Polish edition has been carefully translated to reflect the spirit of the old reading, while making it accessible to the modern reader. It was provided with a preface, many explanatory footnotes and new illustrations maintained in the climate of old adventure books.
The Art of Forest Camping is an engaging read for long winter evenings. The author's enthusiasm for canoe expeditions, camping, fishing and enjoying communing with wild nature will keep you looking forward to summer.
The book in Polish language version.
