ARKADY FIEDLER ( 1894 -1985 ) One of the most famous Polish travelers and writers. Author of thirty-two books, which for several decades have been the canon of Polish travel literature. Arkady Fiedler's works, translated into more than twenty languages, are known far beyond Polish borders. Among the bestsellers were his reportage books, published before World War II, describing expeditions to Amazonia (“Fish are singing in Ukajala”) and North America (“Canada pachną-ca żywicą”). In 1974, the Arkady Fiedler Museum-Literary Workshop was established in Puszczykowo near Poznań (www.fiedler.pl). In this unique place one can get acquainted with the author's rich oeuvre and see plenty of memorabilia from the writer's and his sons' numerous travels.
The 1940 Battle of Britain was a time when the fate of a Europe bowed under the yoke of the German Third Reich was at stake. The burden of defending the island rested on the shoulders of fighter pilots, who had to fend off powerful Luftwaffe armadas. Poles also took part in this remarkable battle. Among them were pilots from the legendary 303rd Fighter Squadron, who performed admirably in the hour of hard trial, achieving impressive efficiency.
Arkady Fiedler accompanied them during the Battle of Britain and colorfully described their service. The book “Dywizjon 303” was written, in which the history of this famous unit was presented for the first time. Let's hope that this edition will reach a wide range of young readers, because despite the passage of time, the book remains a beautiful testimony to the efforts of the people thanks to whom the red and white checkerboard became a symbol of aviation craftsmanship, sacrifice and the will to fight for the freedom of the fatherland.
The book is written in Polish.
