The last of the Jagiellonians did not live to see his descendants. Sigismund Augustus ended the history of the Lithuanian-Polish dynasty. Only his sister Anna remained, but it was not decided to entrust her with the crown. In less than a year, the Pacta Conventa was written and a proposal was sent to the pretender. He arrived, took the crown and fled after a year. The lords and the Sejm advised, it was still up to them to have the deciding vote, which would soon lose its weight entirely. This time they chose brilliantly, but unfortunately it was the last good choice.
In the pages of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth , the enormity of the mistakes made by our ancestors comes before our eyes ; Paweł Jasienica scores almost all of them, presenting irrefutable evidence and facts. Failure to reform, fanaticism on the one hand, and inertia on the other, lack of strategic concepts, lack of hierarchy of needs and lack of political hearing of the Vasa ruined the previous order and pushed into ruin the reform and political thought of their time. The strength was still there, but the legs were already clay....
The book is written in Polish.
