The German armored division, equipped with the most modern military equipment, was a self-contained tactical unit, capable of breaking through enemy defensive lines, eliminating enemy resistance in the captured area and establishing a new front line.
The first three German armored divisions were formed in 1935 at the initiative and under the supervision of Heinz Guderian. They gained a reputation for their blitzkrieg tactics and rapid military victories in 1939-1940. By the time Germany invaded the Soviet Union, the number of these formations had grown to 21. Their organization (the number of regiments, battalions and the types of vehicles used) was constantly changing, as lessons were learned from the course of the fighting and the problems of equipping these divisions with adequate equipment.
The third volume of the compendium German Armored Weapons is a comprehensive source of knowledge about the structure and history of the most powerful formation of the Third Reich's armed forces. The author presents the fascinating history of the armored divisions - from their creation in the pre-war years to their development and evolution during the war period - as well as a detailed description of all units in their composition and operations on the battlefields. It describes in detail the organizational structures and combat experience of these divisions on the fronts of World War II. The publication is based on rich sources from the pre-war and wartime years, and the text is illustrated with charts and tables, quoted excerpts from authentic wartime reports and striking, previously unknown photos from archives and private collections.
