The 60th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising marks the publication of the latest book by Norman Davies, one of the most popular and widely read contemporary historians. Davies has placed the story of the Uprising against the vast backdrop of events from 1939 to 1956, but primarily focusing his attention on the workings of the coalition of which the Polish armed forces were a part.
“In the end,“ he writes, ‘I decided that the fundamental question to be asked was not ’why did the insurgents fail to achieve their goals?” but “why, during two months of hesitation and deliberation, did the victorious Allies fail to organize assistance?”
The result is a passionate book, which shows the seemingly well-known events in a new light and at the same time - by including the most personal perspective of the participants in the Uprising - is deeply moving.
The book is written in Polish.
