The M65 uniform system served American soldiers during the winter seasons, from the 1960s until 2009. A huge advantage of field jackets in the M65 system over its predecessor, the M51, was that they had a wind-protective collar, which proved very useful during the Vietnam War during the cold monsoon seasons. It was the men's M65 jackets that gained almost cult status. They gained wider fame while penetrating mass culture after the screenings of such legendary films as Rambo: First Blood with Sylvester Stalonn and Taxi Driver with Robert De Niro. The jacket was also present in Polish films and TV series, to mention the character of Lieutenant Borewicz played by Bronislaw Cieslak in the TV series 07 Zgłoś Się.
Historically, the jacket was made from NYCO fabric, a blend of 50% cotton and 50% nylon. Today's manufacturers, still remain faithful to this composition. The jacket was also impregnated with a spec called Quarpel, effectively protecting against water. Four color variants of M65 jackets were introduced for the US military: olive green (OG-107), woodland camouflage and desert camouflage (3 Color Desert Pattern).
