Not that far away lies a country in which people have been living in lockdown for more than three decades. This is Armenia, which, due to its closed borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan, the murderous conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, dependence on Russia, extremely difficult economic situation and progressive state decay, is isolated internationally. But Armenian confinement also has a strong mental dimension. There is an impassable boundary of otherness between Armenians and the rest of the world.
.
Armenia. Closed Circuit is an attempt to bring the complex history of this country closer and understand the identity of Armenians. Maciej Falkowski, who has spent many years getting to know Armenia from the inside, has brought back from his travels fascinating stories about the Armenian past and the present. So he tells about the capital and the provinces, about politics and daily life, about the bone of contention with Azerbaijan's Nagorno-Karabakh, but he also brings readers stories from eastern Turkey, from Georgia, Russia, the Middle East, the former Eastern Borderlands, Venice and many other places to which fate has thrown Armenians over the centuries.
His book, however, is not only a story about Armenia and Armenians, but also about how much history can define modernity. For the closed circuit of the title is also a contribution to reflection on the responsibility of elites for the fate of ordinary people, on how the ideological visions or brutal interests of the former often determine the lives of the latter for many decades.
The book is written in Polish.
