When three teams were simultaneously making a summit attack on May 10, 1996, a storm broke over Mount Everest. A murderous struggle for survival began. Jon Krakauer survived.
The book "Wszystko za Everest" hit the bestseller lists, but also caused a lot of controversy. It also became a source of inspiration for filmmakers. In turn, the tragedy itself - despite the fact that it happened almost twenty years ago - still stirs emotions. The problems described by Krakauer have grown even more acute: more and more people are taking part in commercial expeditions to Everest, disregarding the dangers and consequences of human expansion in the world's highest mountains.
“The superbly written story of the fate of the two tragically ended commercial expeditions that set out to summit Everest in the spring of 1996 has hit the canon of mountain literature. All for Everest has maintained a high position on the bestseller list for almost twenty years, which is probably due to the vividly sketched characters, capital narrative, and, last but not least, the strong emotions of the author, who is apparently afflicted by a kind of “survivor syndrome.” After all, he was one of two survivors among the six participants of his expedition who reached the summit. Krakauer's portrayal of events caused considerable controversy in the climbing community and in the American media. As it turned out, the author took a much more critical stance toward the participants of the competing expedition, although it was his team that suffered the greatest losses. The main axis of the dispute crystallized around the figure of the guide Anatoly Bukreev, when in fact it was he who contributed to the rescue of all members of his team. The present edition is the first full version of “All for Everest” to be published in Poland. The intensity of the polemic, reflected in the last part of the book, brings to mind the storm that swept through Poland not so long ago after the tragically ended 2013 winter expedition to Broad Peak.” Krystyna Palmowska
"Wszystko za Everest" is only ostensibly a story about an expedition to Mount Everest. For Jon Krakauer, while telling the story of a tragic expedition to the world's highest peak, in truth weaves a tale of death, human courage and sacrifice. This is one of those reportages from which it is impossible to tear yourself away and which cannot be forgotten. A masterful, almost philosophical parable for everyone, even those who are completely uninterested in high altitude climbing.” Robert Ziębiński, “Newsweek”
The book is written in Polish.
