A great deal has been written about the January Uprising. There are memoirs, loose memories or multi-volume monographs. Rarely, however, are those who came from beyond the borders to challenge the tsar's empire in the name of Poland's freedom mentioned.

Among them were representatives of many nations: Italians, French, Hungarians, Russians, Ukrainians, Swedes, Germans, Serbs, Croats. They gave up comfortable lives to fight together with Poles for the freedom of the Republic.

Volunteers from other countries played a huge role in the January Uprising. Here are portraits of the most committed, who by no means should fall into oblivion.
