This is an insightful, expertly written history of the technical and tactical evolution of sniping from the Crimean War to the present day.
This book describes how for an astonishingly long time armies underestimated the role of snipers in combat, even though accurate shooting was already technically possible in the 19th century. The breakthrough didn't come until 1939-1940, during the Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union, when trained sharpshooters proved their strength, and the famous Finn Simo Häyhä shot 505 enemy soldiers in less than 100 days. In 1941, at the time of the German invasion, the Russians were already better prepared, and as the war came to an end - in addition to soldiers such as Vasily Zaitsev, the hero from Stalingrad with 242 confirmed fatal hits, more than two thousand female snipers were trained in the Soviet Union. After 1945, the fame of snipers faded again for a while. However, the Vietnam War, the endless conflict in the Middle East and the threat of terrorism gave new impetus to the development of not only sniping, but also more effective weapons.
The author discusses the key field skills for the sniper's craft: hunting, tracking and patient observation. He highlights landmark achievements in the history of the development of sniper rifles, and in particular their advantages and disadvantages. Presents the results of accuracy tests of various rifles with a unique system of statistical evaluation of hits. Provides new information about the best snipers, often correcting old mistakes, based on genealogical research.
