By the middle of World War II, German armored troops - having gained tactical and technical prowess during victorious lightning campaigns - were at the height of their power. But the following years proved extremely difficult for the Panzerwaffe. After the great offensives in the East in 1942, they had to go on the defensive on all fronts.
The clash with modern Soviet tanks, such as the T-34, showed that the German machines of the time were no match for the enemy's armored vehicles in what determined combat value: firepower, speed and maneuverability, and armor. Thus, in the middle of the war, Germany embarked on a rapid modernization of its basic types of tanks - PzKpfw III and IV - and introduced new vehicles into service, including the famous Panthers (PzKpfw V Panther) and Tigers (PzKpfw VI Tiger). Panzerwaffe commanders also undertook a variety of ingenious tactical measures to maintain the myth of the menacing German armored forces right up to the final days of the war.
This volume, a sequel to the book German Armored Weapons. Volume 1: 1939-1942 (RM Publishing House 2019), has been devoted to the history of the Panzerwaffe in the second half of the war - from the armored battle of Kursk, shrouded in legend, through the fierce battles in Normandy, to the last days of the defense of Berlin. Original combat reports and numerous previously unknown photographs from private and archival collections provide a better understanding of the technical and operational aspects of the history of the "armored fist" of the mighty German war machine.
