Panzerjäger - German anti-tank units - were among the most innovative, and relatively lesser-known, military formations of World War II.
Soon after the British used tanks in World War I, the German army realized the urgent need to develop tactics to combat this new threat. During the interwar years, the production of anti-tank guns (Panzerabwehrkanone) and the training of special anti-tank units (Panzerjägertruppe) began. These units usually supported the infantry by fighting enemy tanks and concentrating fire on them, and towed and self-propelled anti-tank guns could be rapidly moved to threatened sections of the front.
In this book, the first part of a two-volume series, Thomas Anderson describes a number of types of German anti-tank weapons, pointing out their advantages and shortcomings, and outlining the process of improving the tactics and equipment of Panzerjäger units. Volume One covers the period from their inception, through the pre-war years of development, their baptism of fire in the early years of World War II, their successes when they were instrumental in the conquest of Poland and then France, Belgium and the Netherlands, as well as Yugoslavia and Greece in 1939-1941, and their first clashes with Soviet tanks during Operation Barbarossa. The author describes in detail the armament, tactics and organization of the German anti-tank forces. The text is enriched by previously unpublished photos from the war years, as well as historical documents - reports, battle reports.
Thomas Anderson - an expert on German armored weapons of World War II and author of widely read books on them. The RM Publishing House has published his three-volume "German Armored Weapons" (2022), monographs on legendary tanks: "Tiger" (2022), "Panzer IV" (2022), "Panther" (2023), and the compendium "Tanks of World War II" (2021).
The book is written in Polish.
