The closer a person finds himself to war, the less he likes it. The human mind is controlled by a primal, unconscious, practically imperceptible aversion to killing and an equally strong fear of losing lives. To make it easier to win wars, enormous effort and skyrocketing money have been invested in trying to suppress these reactions in soldiers.

This book combines first-hand accounts of various battles with the results of scientific research in the psychology of armed combat, which offers reliable insights into what war is capable of doing to the human mind. He doesn't talk about generals and strategists, but focuses on the lowest tactical level - the ordinary soldiers who face the enemy. He shows what and why goes on in the head of a man who is supposed to killand may himself be killed, and is fully aware of it. He hints at how to use human reactions to achieve victory and at the same time protect human lives.

Leo Murray is the literary pseudonym of a military analyst and former soldier who has spent half his life studying the psychology of armed combat. He has interviewed many war veterans, young and old, as well as commanders.

The book is in a Polish language version.
