Sir Francis Galton, cousin of Charles Darwin, born in 1822, was involved in statistics, sociology, psychology, meteorology; he was a geographer, explorer, innovator and pioneer of intelligence research. He developed the basic tools of statistics, created the fingerprint recognition system, and the controversial concept of eugenics.
Galton was also a traveler. He discovered Lake Otjikoto in northern Namibia. In 1853 he was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society. This established his reputation as a geographer and explorer. As a young man, he took part in an expedition through southwest Africa. He described his thoughts on travel in his book"The art of travel," first published in 1885.
From the pages of the book, the reader will learn how in the Victorian era water sources were sought, camps were set up, rivers were crossed, trees were climbed, fires were lit, firearms of the time were cared for and also how expedition companions were disciplined and hostile natives were negotiated with. The topics covered in "The Art of Travel" still delight readers today, almost 170 years after the first edition.
The book in a Polish language version.
